who wrote "heroes never die; they merely fade..."

In his 1951 farewell address to Congress, Douglas McCarther used this famous poem to summarize his feelings about being a soldier. I used the first line of the poem for a paper I wrote about Stephen Ambrose's Red Badge of Courage for the theme of both novel and poem are closely linked. However, I cannot remember who wrote the poem, and thus cannot find the entire poem. If anyone can assist me in my search, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks. Nigk Rattner

I believe the line is "old soldiers never die, they just fade away" rather than "heroes"

I don't know who wrote the words, but this comes from a country and western song from, I think back in the 50s. You might look in that direction.
