NRC Audit of Monticello NGP

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

The NRC has issued its first audit findings for a domestic U.S. nuclear facility.

As with the recently issued NERC report on electric industry readiness to the U.S. Department of Energy, the body of the NRC report does not match well with the information contained within the report. I'll try to comment on the findings in the next day or so.

I've HTML'ized the audit findings, which can be found at www.euy2k.com/audit1.htm

I'll give you a comment in the form of a series of questions. 1) Why is the NRC auditing the Monticello facility when it is scheduled to be down for refueling during the transition? Certainly if they planned to be down during the date change, chances are good they would be more 'casual' about readiness deadlines. 2) Monticello only has one unit representing 10% of NSP's total electric capacity. Would it not make more sense to audit NSP's Praire Island, which has two units and produces 20% of the electricity they provide to customers and will be running during the transition? 3) For that matter, if the NRC is interested gaining a qualifieid understanding of the complexities of Y2K in the nuclear energy field, would it not make more sense to audit at sites where nuclear power provides 50% of raw power produced by a utilties entity, like here is South Carolina?
