SSIC/Disposition Manual(s) update

greenspun.com : LUSENET : DON Records Management Working Group : One Thread

Folks,

Just a quick note to pass some info. First of all, I have scanned Chapters 1 and 2 of SSIC Manual and matched them against the Disposition Manual. Some minor title changes and quite a few SSIC's listed in manual but not listed in Disposition Manual. These two chapters look pretty good other than that.

Secondly, Irv Raines has sent me a major part of the SSIC Manual in Word format (numerical listing) so I have begun formatting that. We are still trying to determine how to retrieve the alphabetical section without re-keying it. Either way, we will have some reserves working on it in the next two weeks so we have made some great progress on that.

I discussed with Jim about combining the SSIC Manual with the Disposition Manual. He has his doubts and I am sure we will need to discuss further. As a former YN, I got to thinking about it also. Other than the fact that we have approached this from a "staffer" point of view, the fleet rarely used or needed the entire disposition manual, but used the SSIC manual heavily. Now if they have the advantage of a good computer and could pull up only the parts they needed off a CD or NEDS, life is great. Some commands, however, are not that lucky. I think that maybe we should consider this as Part I and Part II type of manual (just a thought). That way we could tailor the SSIC Manual (Part I) to the fleet commands (size-wise I mean), and it would still be part of the big product.

Anyway, I am just thinking out loud. Will press on with the SSIC Manual.

See you later, Steve
