Early morning lily pads

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

This is a bit minimalist but sweeping vistas are hard to come by down here in the southeast. nikon F3, 180mm 2.8 lens, first rays of sun. 1 and 1/2 cups of coffee.

So, was that Starbucks? ;>

Seriously though...nice shot.

This composition misses for me. The upturned leaf is very interesting. Why is so little of the picture area devoted to it ?

Mike, I also do my photography in the SE. I really like this image. It captures the spirit of early morning on a quiet pond. If I had been taking the shot, I would have worked very hard to get a water lily bud - they would all be closed at this time of day - or some animal wild life in the shot. But your shot has made me rethink that idea. The upturned leaf to have the sun in the image is very effective. I would be proud to hang this one on my wall. Thanks for sharing this with us. Dave

I think there are two possibly very good pictures that are unfortunately combined into one cluttered one.

The whole scene with lillys in the foreground and the color of the water and surface tension effect along the edge of the leaves has a nice, quiet feeling.

A closeup of the weird-looking leaf, brightly lighted, may make an interesting picture as well. Perhaps an abstract if you could get a macro shot of it, depending on the lighting.

Together, they just miss working...at least for me.

i like the composition. the ''flat" lily pads give a sense of place and make the upturned leaf stand out even more.

Good job. This is how to work with lighting.

Minimalist? I think it's the opposite. The eye wanders around the frame in search of more to draw interest (since there are so many foci upon which to alight). As an editorial image documenting a still morning at a lily pond it communicates well, but it's rather weak artistically (so far as I can tell...).

Quite interesting. The vertical leafes add so much interest what would otherwise be a boring pond and suggest a diagonal (from bottom left to top right). The lightning is perfect.

I just saw an interesting image within this image. Picture a vertical shot with that upturned leaf and its reflection filling the frame. I think that would be a really cool shot.
