Follow a school Y2K Project

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hello all.

Well, the CA Dept of Education are finally insisting that the schools start working on compliance. Last night I sat in a meeting and heard our county tech admit that they were just working on the problem. Working out the Y2K problems at a school site is supposed to be the District tech coordinator's job, not a site tech's, but....Anyway, I'm going to post plans, checklists, and findings on my page as I go:

Follow along if you like. And if you want to drop me a lina with any praise or fault, please do so.

First project:

Start by trying to follow the information "trail" that controls your paycheck and its "automatic" withholding to taxes, medical, leave, insurance, charity, etc.

Sobering - to get paid, and to make sure all those people get paid, and to amke sure school can start up on Feb 1st (after all those chacks are written on Jan31), evry one of those CA and county programs have to work correctly in July 1999. (Before the school year starts.)

You don't have much time.

I must be tired, sorry about that terrible spelling.

Thank the Lady (or the deity of your choice) that is the one system taht has already been tested compliant! Our County started at the start of FY 97-98 and got that ONE system to work. By that system I mean the one where you input the # of hours every one works and it correctly figures the deductions and makes up checks. They arn't planning to direct deposit or automatically transfer anything. At least this is what they tell me, at some point this month I plan to go see it for myself. But EVERY other system, from our attendance records, which is how the state decides how much money to send us, to our supplier payment system, to our internet connection, to everything needs to be done. I'm responsible for this site, but other techno- savy people here also work with these systems, so I'm planning on divide and conquer. Then I'll help the other schools in my district, and then the county. But I need to get this site done first. Thank god we're a Mac platform, that cut my workload in half!
