silly things your brain thinks.. : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Last night my mom and I were just flipping channels looking for something other than The Clinton/Lewinsky/Starr Smoke Screen. As we watched a snippet of a Cher re-run,a few minutes of Faith and Tim crooning their latest collabrative love-song,and a celebrity sound bite here or there(about how the flavor of the month made their own luck..blah,blah,blah..)...both my mother and I were wondering just exactly what the ratio of y2k aware and preparing celebrities there were to ones that are unaware or just too egocentrical to think it will effect them?? A silly thought, but it does make you wonder how much Tinsel Town knows when you see artists gearing up for their next tour,or promoting their newest movie etc. I know they need to give the illusion of everything being ok, but you have to wonder what they know....

They are too busy making films, soap operas, cutting record deals, wining and dining, snorting their favorite drugs, and appearing on talk shows. They have money in the bank and have no need for anything except more publicity and money. They live their lives in mansions and homes here and there. If you told them what you think the future holds, you would get the same reaction from ordinary people that you have already tried to convince. In other words, WTSHTF they will become just like anyone else scrambling to survive.

Well, looks like some (unnamed) "celebrities" are very Aware -

From the sports section, 09/20/1998 (Sunday) San Diego Union Tribune:

Sign of the times

With concerns that the year 2000 computer bug could wreak havoc with some banks, one NFL player called his agent last week and said several players on his team were going to pull all their money out of banks -- millions of dollars -- and keep it in their houses. The agent advised the player that it was a bad idea.

So does Rush Limbaugh. He just bought himself a spread in Florida.

-- Bardou (, September 22, 1998.

I wouldn't care how much money they wanted to pay me to do a movie, I would refuse to be away from my family any time near the end of '99. If it all goes down as we here suspect, people will be scattered all over away from their homes and families for who knows how long. I can't imagine how terrifying that would be! Luckily it will be the Holidays and more people (families) are together then, but still there are those that are on location for this or that movie or play or whatever. Blondie

-- Blondie Marie (, September 22, 1998.

Wow - football players taking and stashing millions each would sure put a crunch on the available currency that WE can take out, wouldn't it? Hmmm, if they can't get access any better than the rest of us, how would you like to have a bunch of hungry linebackers at your door asking for food!! Luckily, Iowa doesn't have any professional football teams! (NFL, I mean.)

-- Melissa (, September 22, 1998.

Madeline, there is a name for what you is cognitive dissonance. This is when we know conflicts with what we perceive and creates images. A few months ago a lot of us were posting about this on various Y2K saw a plow in someone's front yard as a lawn ornament and thought about how that plow might be needed for actually plowing land....some of us have posted about going into grocery stores and seeing shelves full of food and having panic attacks...etc. Cognitive Dissonance...It is normal and not strange, but feels strange. I think it is part and parcel of living in a transitional time, which we are all doing...we, the early awakers are preparing...others are not and the world is rolling on in unexplainable ways...Poof...Dissonance...

Hang in my baby sister says: "grab a helmet, honey, and strap in!"

Barthou, Many Hollywood type stars have ranches here in Montana. They just don't advertise it : )

-- Karen Shirer (, September 23, 1998.

While reading through this thread a picture came to mind...that of a rich hollywood type stranded in an airport waving hundreds of dollars for ride home. No gas, no lights, just thousands of people in mass confusion. If I have learned anything this this past year, money is not happiness. But stash some anyway. :)

-- Dave (, September 23, 1998.

Thanks, Donna!! By the way, I'm not only impressed with your psychological evaluation, but your ability to ITALICIZE! I'm just glad to know that I'm not crazy; some days I still think,"Wait a minute, this is gonna happen because of 2 digits!?!?" The one good thing that will result when the rest of the world wakes up and panics, is that I wont feel like a fruitcake anymore...

madeline,...html coding is fun...and easy. You too can be a happy html goof. To make a sentence bold do this without using the quotation marks: "This is my bold sentence" B for Bold...To make a sentence or word in italics do like so without the quotation marks: "This is my sentence in italics"

Gee I hope this works, tricky to show someone online the code...(crossing fingers)

-- Donna Barthuley (, September 23, 1998.

Shoot, it didn't more try.

You use Left Arrow, letter b, right arrow, then your word or sentence. After your sentence Left arrow, forward slash, letter B, Right arrow. < B > Your sentence here.< / B >

I put extra spaces would omit the spaces. For italics...use the letter "I" instead of the letter "B".

Or you could display this age old type of timing mechanism if you really wanted to.

I'm jealous Craig....

That little sucker already time-dilated?

-- Robert A. Cook, P.E. (Kennesaw, GA) (, September 23, 1998.

You all are SO talented! Who put the music on that other thread? That was really neat!

-- Gayla Dunbar (, September 23, 1998.

I'll never admit to putting Prince's 1999 on the "Quotes that may apply to Y2k" thread, because there's no way I would have known to find the midi file at Midifarm or to use the bgsound tag to link to it, and besides my lawyer says that you can't prove it any more than you can prove that sometimes I occassionally string my sentences on in long and confusing fashion which I don't mind but some people think it can be rather annoying, however it is a subject of which Prince never sang about in most of his rather flashy and obscure melodious tonal cantatas.

-- Craig (, September 23, 1998.

Craig, you are GUILTY as charged!

-- Gayla Dunbar (, September 23, 1998.

My son and I got a kick out of that Prince song!! Hey-let's start a rumor: If you listen to Prince's song "1999" backwards you can hear,"Y2k is coming,Y2k is coming!"

-- madeline (, September 23, 1998.

Only if played backwards at high speed. If you do it a bit slower, it says "Paul is dead."

-- Paul Neuhardt (, September 23, 1998.

I am the Walrus,...Ook, Oo-ca-choo!

-- Donna Barthuley (, September 23, 1998.

Your Beatles lyrics are non-compliant.

It's: I am the walrus, goo goo goo jube. Of course, it makes just as much sense the other way!

Not to mention their obviously non compliant Y2K song called Revolution #9. Should clearly have been 0009.

-- Craig (, September 23, 1998.

Could John have known? Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9.... Looks like 9/9/99 to me.

-- Bill (, September 23, 1998.

This thread definitely has the right title. I was laughing so hard by the time I got to the end, my husband came to see what was SO funny. Laughter does the heart good...

-- Gayla Dunbar (, September 24, 1998.

Ok, I guess this is somewhat on the topic: Lately, due to my ever mushrooming worry on Y2K, I have really been having some curious dreams. Nothing like "Toms Take" mind you, but clearly on The Future as we approach 2000. Anyone else? Just wondering.

-- Joe (, September 24, 1998.

Joe, start a new thread with this- I think it would be interesting. Lots of people may not look back at this thread.

-- Gayla Dunbar (, September 24, 1998.

Announcing NEW THREAD: "Y2K in your dreams" (per suggestion by Gayla).
