Get another cat?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

My MC is almost 8 mos. I have been told they don't like to be alone. We had another cat, who just passed away. He seems to be doing ok after 1 month. How can I tell if another cat would be good for him? Also, is it possible that he would just like being an only cat? I am not sure that another cat at this time would be good for me. He has been extremely spoiled. Are there any signs that he might be lonely?

Signs that he might be lonely would be destructive behavior and inappropriate urination. If I were in your place, I'd probably give him some time to recover from the loss of his friend before getting another cat. And I'd try to show him extra love and attention. If he seems happy and well-adjusted, he probably doesn't need a companion other than you. If, however, he seems to be acting neurotic, he might want a feline companion. I'd suggest talking with your vet before deciding whether or not to get another cat. And remember, if you're not in a position to have two cats, it's probably best that you don't. Just make sure that you give him a whole lot of personal attention so he knows he's loved and treasured!
