Okay, most of us here think that Titanic is the best movie ever. So, what is the worst movie ever, in your opinion?? I vote for Starship Troopers.

Okay, this is tricky, but I think my vote would have to go to "My Own Private Idaho" with Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix. I didn't understand ONE single part of it.

This year its Armageddon and Dr. Dolittle by a long shot! Of course both of these films grossed over 100 million which proves the general population has no taste! A new great film is The Opposite Of Sex. It seems like there aren't any interesting new films coming out in the next few months.

Some comments:

Starship Troopers: I enjoyed the film, although (IMHO) the novel by Robert A. Heinlein was *much* better. (There's an alternate universe where Paul Verhoeven directed a Titanic film, and James Cameron directed Starship Troopers...Titanic turns out a total bomb, and Troopers turns out more like Saving Private Ryan.

The Fifth Element: Spectacular eye candy, but not much else. "Fifth" shows that a solid director, great visual effects and a love story don't always work out.

My Own Private Idaho: Gus Van Sant's keystone film; at that point in my life, it struck a resonance in me.

Armageddon: The world's best celestial object deflection movie! I have to admit that it is a guilty pleasure...at least I didn't go running out and make a "ArmagedDen" website.

Dr. Dolittle: No comment (didn't go see it).

My Personal Worst Film of All-Time:
Manos: The Hand of Fate (as seen on "Mystery Science Theatre 3000")
Runner-up: The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies

Okay...I've thought about it. "ConAir" sucked friggin' WIND!!!!! Great effects, of course, but I've never seen so many great actors fail at their crafts in my whoooooole life. Rotten, rotten flick...

Second...I just saw "Total Eclipse" with Leo and some other people I don't know. The acting was good, I suppose, if it takes any talent to do numerous graphic and tasteless sex scenes between members of the same gender. It was a very disturbing film and I am pretty sure I hated it. However, I can't decide if it's because I felt like I needed a shower afterwards or because it was just bad. I would appreciate anyone's opinions who have seen this film. I would also like to say that I am VERY glad not to have seen it before I saw "Titanic". It very possibly could've ruined it for me.

I also agree with "Private Idaho". What up with that anyway???

Have to agree with Thomas T. on this one. "Manos: the Hands of Fate" is far and away the worst film I have ever seen in my life. In every way possible, this film sets new lows in the craft of movie making. I would recommend watching this thing only if you can get the MST3K version with running commentary.

All these other films mentioned--Armegeddon, The Rock, etc.--may be bad (I haven't seen them all), but they cannot possibly match "Manos" for shear awful movie making. There really isn't anything else I can say to convey HOW bad it is. You have to see it to believe it.

In my opinion, "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" has to be the all-time worst movie I've ever had to sit through (yes, my two sons were with me, otherwise I definitely would have departed the theatre). I had rather enjoyed "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective" so was looking forward to something in the same vein. If it's not the worst movie ever, AV:WNC has to at least rank as the dumbest movie ever made!!!

Have you ever seen a North Korean movie? I got a few "chances" by default during the last years of communism in Romania. Worse than that, I can't even imagine. I remember I saw this movie (the title is not important, as they're all the same pure propaganda) back in high school (1982-86) and went with a buddy of mine to see it for three times. Every time we were trying to find more obvious mistakes, I mean goofs visible from a mile. If you ever get the chance, don't miss it. It's for lifetime...

It's certainly not the best movie ever, nor the worst. But I think one could stand a reasonable chance of winning an argument that "Titanic" is the worst movie to have deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Picture, especially if your opponent hasn't seen "Around the World in 80 Days". 1997 wasn't a particularly good year for great movies; "Titanic" was the best choice of the 5 nominated films. At least its selection wasn't due to a blantant snub (Citizen Kane wasn't even NOMINATED in 1941) or an ignorant decision ("Oliver", a popular 1968 musical, beat "2001: A Space Odyssey", which many Academy voters hadn't seen and dismissed as "just a sci-fi special- effects picture").
