HP4p Upgade - Is it worth it?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Unless I upgrade the driver and SCSI of my HP4p scanner it will not function under Windows98 (yes, I know - I shouldn't have got 98!!) Is the upgrade considered worth it given the introduction of a newer generation of scanner - particularly the HP 6200c and the Umax 1220S (my budget is around #300/$500). Any advice would be more than gratefully received.

The number of complaints I've seen in my e-mail about HP scanners suggests that selling your current scanner while it's still worth something and upgrading to a UMAX Astra or Agfa SnapScan would be the way to go.

On the other hand, this depends somewhat on your satisfaction with the HP and what the driver update costs in the UK. In the states the charge for the update is like $2.95. You also might want to look at the workaround that a couple of my readers dug up for the 5100 and see if that will help with the 4p. http://www.image-acquire.com/scanner/viscomm/hpsj5100.shtml
