IMO this photo has a lot of distracting elements. Firstly, the white background branch is the worst. It competes and wins for ones attention. Secondly, the shadows on the squirrel produce a lot of contrast, especially around the face. Thirdly, the squirrel is perfectly centered and looking out the right side of the photo. On a positive note, the incline of the log is nice. If you crop off the left half just past the tail, you end up with a better composition. Adding a little fill flash would help.

Yes, there are many elements in that picture that could be considered extraneous but I don't find them quite as distracting as Paul. If you were to remove all those extra elements you would end up with a pretty sterile "text book" representation of an animal. Some fill-in flash would have been nice of course.
