Note: The following is a note from NERC, and a rough copy of the pdf file the announcement was sent in. You may want to copy this into an email and forward it to the y2k project manager at your power company and your state's public utilities commissioners. "This appears to be a very positive development. Top-down efforts like this will work best when combined with bottom-up grasssroots efforts starting in our local communities. Are your state's regulators and local utilities attending this event? I surely hope so. Good contingency planning includes prevention!
Best wishes,
Leon Kappelman"

Introduction
Attend this workshop to join other Y2K Program Managers in sharing and resolving the key issues you face. We will review the current status of the industry's progress in addressing Y2K, as reported by NERC to the U.S. Department of Energy in September 1998. What does this report mean to the industry in terms of priorities and work schedule? We also will have opportunities for small group discussions on key issues such as Y2K metrics and reporting requirements, coordination with other industries such as telecommunications, and Y2K scenario assessment.

Background
In May 1998, the U.S. Department of Energy requested NERC to provide the leadership to determine the readiness of electric production and delivery systems for the transition to the Year 2000. An initial report, including plans and schedules for preparing electrical systems for Y2K, is to be delivered to DOE in September 1998.NERC has worked jointly with APPA, CEA, EEI, EPRI, NEI, and NRECA to assess Y2K readiness of electric power systems, to set industry priorities and targets, and to share information about Y2K.
Workshop Objectives
This workshop will allow participants to:
- understand the expectations for the industry evolving from the report to DOE,
- share ideas and solutions with other Y2K managers in a diverse set of challenging issues,
- meet with representatives from related industries such as telecommunications and gas, and
- refine the industry action plan for Y2K.
