The Universally Forgotten Vendor

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Why has no one mentioned the fact that if the MOST CRITICAL VENDOR ANY BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION HAS....it's LABOR VENDOR aka EMPLOYEES are not PERSONALLY prepared for Y2K disruptions they will not show up for work!! Then who will implement those contingency plans everyone is making?? No one in their right mind will leave his/her wife/children home alone without tv, microwave, lights, water, food, heat, phone, radio or money in the cold darkness of winter to please some employer unless that employer has stocked up on emergency supplies to distribute to those employees who show up for work.

Anne, you are so right. As an LA resident I have recent knowledge regarding what it is like to be fearful of going out during a disruption. No, not an earthquake. I'm a native of California and earthquakes are second nature. When LA suffered during the recent riots the majority of all people stayed home and watched on TV. What would happen if the power was out, the phones dead, etc? No way would anyone leave there family in that kind of circumstance. Absolutely not. Including some police, fire and other critical services. You raise an excellent point. Thank goodness all of us computer geeks are single! ;-> seriously, I believe you're totally right - on the level of those in certain businesses. Those actually working on the issues of power, telecommunications, and the like on the level of circuitry and programming, seem to me to be mostly single. As a programmer myself, I've found an inexhaustible supply of intelligent single men, and a serious lack of married ones. Not meaning to offend anyone, since there are a few married men in the industry, but they are usually the exception, and not the rule.... my two dinars there *wink*

Michael is too right! I was in L.A. during the FIRST riot and I won't be risking life and limb to play wage slave (for no wages) no matter what the boss sez. This could bring a whole nwe meaning to the phrase 'take this job and shove it! Also, don't count on being able to go shopping any time soon. Those trains that won't be carrying coal to the power plants will be joined by the trucks that won't be hauling milk and toilet paper and lettuce and toothpaste to your local supermarket.

Single guys/gals have people they care about and people that care about them. Do we think that a single son is going to work if his family is in big trouble, not in my part of the country. My son knows that if things get bad come home, he may not be prepareing himself and may decide to work till almost the end but he can come home where we are prepared.People who are concerned about Y2K are very concerned about family. As expressed in the replys if there is no light, heat, water,or food people will op for protecting there family first job no way.
