Carosel

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The Carosel system was used in the Apollo mission to the moon. This guidance computer is called Magic. It had a clock invented in in 1965. What will it do in 2000? The system is now running in all the big aircraft DC-8 DC-10 L-1011 747 etc. The system was not tested for the year 2000 - please advise!!! Jerry

Please explain what in the world you are talking about? Have you just read an article in a ten year old magazine or what??? The fact that ANYTHING built in 1965 had nothing to do with micro-processors because and hear this "MICRO-PROCESSORS" were not even a gleam on the eye of the fathers of those who invented them!!!! Transistors were the knew wonderful future of computing at the time. What exactly are you concerned with??? You have a CRT in your TV and terminal...guess what CRT's were around in the mid fifties!!! SO??? And your point is? What IS your point? Do you have a valad concern or are you just ignorant?

Cherri, Jerry asked a valid question. Why are you being such a bitch? Better take your PMS medicine!!

oops.. put the wrong name in....but the message still stands. Cherri, why are you being such a bitch????

I agree with Dave - someone comes in and asks a question and the response is "are you ignorant?" What a great way of making sure that someone doesn't feel comfortable about asking anything ever again! Have you ever heard that there is no thing as a stupid question --- except the one not asked? This gentleman doesn't deserve this response. I'm female - but I agree -- go take a chill pill or some PMS tea or *something* - this was out of line and utterly uncalled for!

I am in Mensa. My IQ is 157. Not exactly "stupid" I was in the computer lab in 1965. I worked on the mainframes. IBM 7090 & 7094 with emulators. Fortran and Cobol. We designed the Magic computer for the Apollo moonshots... The first one required 200 programmers and many years to complete. The memory was 1024 bytes so we had to keep the year to mm/dd/yy The first memory devices were single function and were soldered onto the board. We also used mylar punched tapes for the instructions. We never certified these systems for year 2000. The same system is now used on the big airplanes and Cruise ships. They need to be set to 12/31/99 and taken on a journey as the clock clicks over to 1/1/00 so that the results are documented. Who wants to fly the 777 in the test?

Cherri.....OPEN MOUTH INSERT FOOT!!!!

My father worked in the aerospace industry as an engineer in the 60's and the work he did was highly clasified (spy stuff) if you don't know what your talking about don't be rude to others. Jerry has a very good question. From the sound of his previous employment I think he knows what he's talking about. Cheryl

PS: You might want to pick up a few of the old magazines you might learn something.
