17,000 desktop, workstation, automobile computers

I work for a najor power utility company. We just received a memo stating that every computer (17,000) has to be assessed for Y2K compliance by Septmeber 30, 1998. No way will this be done, since we lack the personnel to do it.

Eh, maybe, maybe not.

If a majority of the desktops are networked, there are various software tools and/or asset management programs available that can be run remotely from the network servers to test and verify each individual desktop connected to the network. Greenwich Mean Time comes immediately to mind.

But as you imply, this is a very large order, and I'm sure that not all of the desktops, laptops, and other platforms are connected to the network. Finding everything will be a challenge unto itself.

The good news: your company is doing something. While 9/30/1998 may be an unattainable goal, at least they are not waiting until 9/30/1999! And, I'm definately encouraged by the apparent corporate wide communication (the memo) on the issue.

Please keep us posted on the results.
