How does the Fuji MX 700 compare to the Canon Powershot A5?

Hi Andrew,

if you favor a Canon, then the only advantage the MX-700 has, is higher resolution (1280x1024).

They are both about the same size (the FUJI is a little wider), cost roughly the same here in Singapore (40 S$ difference in favor of the FUJI), but have different memory-card types. The FUJI does not support the newer 16MB cards, but carrying a few 8MB around will not break your back.

The Canon does macro shots better, has a lens cover (lacking on the MX-700), and looks more like a normal compact camera.

Battery life of both seems good (a friend has a MX-700 and claims "very good"), but I still have to see a battery test type of figure in a review for a A5.

All the above is from reading specs and documentation, since I am also planning on buying a camera, and have worked the list down to these two.

If the guys at imaging-resource would do a review on the MX-700, then we would have more details on the FUJI. They already have an excellent review on the A5.

I now known 4 people with a MX-700, and they are all enthousiastic about it. Pictures seem OK to me, and I DO like the higher resolution. It's just that the Canon A5 is such a sexy little thing. If it had 1280x1024, then the internal conflict would be over. I think the Canon is a better package, but then again the resolution ...

It's really boils down to what you plan to do with the pictures.
