Art in Transportation

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Public Art : One Thread

I am interested in knowing of any art in transportation/infrastructure projects, particular highway projects, bridge projects, landscape/roadsides, sound barriers, bike paths, etc. Need to know contact names and addresses. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Bruce Williams, Iowa Arts Council.

Hi Bruce:

I found this document very helpful and informative. It is called Art in Transit: making it happen put out by the Federal Transit Authority. http://www.fta.dot.gov/library/program/art/index.html

I am working on similar projects. Let me know what else you find.

Kind Regards, Karen Bubb

You should look into the projects done in Phoenix, Az. Most of these were done by the folks who now have a public art consulting business out of Phoenix called the Freeman/Whitehurst Group.

I am currently writing up research on a small metro art scheme in the North East of England, U.K., which contrasts nicely with some of the larger schemes in the US and London, U.K., for example. One 'advocacy' document I have found quite stimulating reading is : Khan, N. and Wolpole, K., Travelling Hopefully: A Study of the Arts in the Transport System, Gulbenkian Foundation, London, 1992. Here in the U.K. there is also now a wonderful national project to integrate public art with a network of cycle paths across the nation: surely justifiably called 'transportation'? Contact me if you want more info on anything in the UK: or visit http://www.unn.ac.uk/~hcv3 for a links site... Jeremy Beach, University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K.

Hi Bruce,

Check out our website www.tilecanvases.com for details on a highway mural project we just completed for the Broadway-Aviation underpass. If you have further questions drop myself..Tom Galloway or our partner Steve Farley (artist of project) through our email addresses.
