Auxilliary Power Components

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

In setting up auxillary power (multiple diesel generators) for our Boys Ranch, what components would be suspect from a y2k compliance perspective, i.e., Trace inverter, power module, switching devices, etc. What is the preferred way to link the power source into our system (at the meter) to provide interrupted power to all structures? Thank you very much for your input. Rusty Ames Turning Point Ranch www.turningpointranch.org

Rusty,

My apologies for the lateness in responding to this question - I was reviewing the archives and just ran into it.

In response to your question, just about all of the above, depending on manufacturer and configuration, could be Y2k suspects. I would further extend your list to UPS's if you have any installed in your facility.

The easiest way to determine Y2k compliance would be to contact the individual component vendors, or look for info on their web pages. Make sure you have the make, model number(s), date purchased, and any other relevant information that the vendor might need to make a determination. Also, make sure that you require them to provide you any compliance information in writing.

One other thing - for skid mounted generator packages, there might also be issues with individual control components on the skid that the OEM is not responsible for or aware of (particularly if this is a custom installation).

In closing, I commend you for questioning the compliance of these items. Best of luck.
