D-600L SHQ vs. HQ

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I just started experimenting with digital photography and I just purchased the Olympus D-600L digital camera. I have been printing pictures using an HP Photosmart printer and I'm pleased with the results so far, but I was wondering what the difference between SHQ and HQ really is. From what I gather, the only difference is the compression ratio which results in the size of the file. When printing, is there any advantages of using SHQ over HQ?

Also, I am looking at purchasing an 8mb Smartcard(s) for the D-600L. When purchasing those, are they all the same or is there a certain (or recommended) brands that should be used?

Thanks, Eric Luttmann

Eric, I've used three different brands of 8 meg cards and I see no difference. The 320 and 340 have a panorama feature that requires the use of Oly brand cards but that doesn't work with the 5 or 600. SHO is rarely needed for good prints. Certain subjects can cause extra artifacts (weird patterens of pixels) and SHO handles those better. I think that if there is lots of fine important detail and high contrast that SHO does a better job. I haven't noticed any need for it in my non-technical subjects. Good Luck, Glenn
