Is the Comparometer fair?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

There is no description along with the images in the Comparometer that outlines basic info about the image such as resolution and what level of compression was applied. Can I assume that the images are at the highest resolution and least compression that the camera allows?

I was comparing the images from the Kodak 210 to the Nikon 900 and was very surprised at how poor the Kodak's images were. I wasn't expecting this much of a difference as the other reviews I've read state that the image quality between cameras like these (top of the line for their respective categories) should be close. However, I notice the image size for the Kodak is about half that of the Nikon. So I'm wondering if your images present a fair comparison.

The difference is the Nikon is a 1.3 MegaPixel camera while the Kodak barely qualifies as a MegaPixel camera. The highest quality Kodak jpg uses a 1:8 compression ratio, I think, while the Nikon uses a 1:4 compression ratio. The images in Comparometer for the Nikon are done at normal or 1:8 compression so the comparison is about as fair as it gets.
