SF Produce Area

Am interested in the history of the old SF Produce district, where it was located, when it moved and where, what were the politics involved in it's development and decline.

The SF Produce District was located where the present Embarcadero Center now stands. The area was accessible to the wharf and transportation. In the 60's it became apparent that the city could make a lot more on tax revenue if the Produce market was moved and the site "redeveloped". An area in the Bayshore was selected for the new produce market.

Justin Herman, "Mr. Negro Removal"(from the Fillmore) had a lot to do with destroying the produce market. I watched, as a little kid, a lot of the buildings being torn down. The area had a sweet, almost sickly smell of ripening/rotting fruit and vegetables. It was in retrospect a wonderful area. 1930's Aerial photos available. Look up Bay Bridge, 1930's in a good search engine, like Dogpile. The entire route of the freeway coming off the bridge is online.
