Canon Optura (still mode) VS. Olympus 600L

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am in the market for both a camcorder and a nice digital still camera. Originally, my choice was to get a Olympus 600L (which almost everyone had a good review) and a separate digital camcorder. Now, I am also considering the Canon Optura and was wondering how good the quality of the stills are. According to Canon it had a 380,000 pixel and uses interpolation to ehance the final pictures, how well is that compared to the 600L? Am I interpreting the Canon's specs corretly?

The D-600L has 1,310,720 pixels in its final image. It will blow away any stills from a camcorder, digital or otherwise. Of course it can't do movies at all. If you're never going to print the images and you're happy with output in the 640x480 range (as opposed to 1280x1024) then a camcorder still is probably sufficient.
