Titanic falls out of top ten box office for Friday June 12th!

For the second time in its 7th month history Titanic fell out of the box office top ten for Friday June 12th. There were three new releases on Friday ,Can't Hardly Wait,Six Days and Seven Nights, and Dirty Work. There still is a chance that Titanic will pick up steam on Saturday and reappear in the box office top ten, because Bullworth is currently listed at #10 and its legs are very weak. If Titanic comes back into the top ten it will mostly be its 26th and final week, because next week opens The X Files film and Disneys Mulan, and I don't know how many theaters Titanic is still playing in? I'm having to drive a long way to see our beloved film!

Which means that "Titanic" made under 300,000 bucks this Friday, as was the BO for the 10th movie.

I know this doesn't mean anything for theaters around the country or anything, but last night, my wife and I went to see Titanic again, and the theater, while not sold out by a long shot, still was pretty well filled.

Of course a few months ago, this same theater had "Titanic" on three of its biggest screens, while now it is on one smaller screen, but still...people were there!!! What was even more surprising to me was that it was obvious that some people there were seeing it for the ***first*** time. You can tell who they are: they groan when Lovejoy plants the necklace in Jack's pocket, they whisper among themselves trying to figure out where the necklace really is, they gasp in surprise when old Rose opens her hand at the end and has it, and so forth. They sound moved by the whole film in a way that only first timers can be: shocked by the power of what they have seen (remember when that was you?).

Clearly, the film is down from the stratopheric heights of January and February, and will probably fall out of the top ten, what with X Files and Mulan (both previewed before Titanic last night, BTW). But don't count it out entirely yet. The number of theaters may continue to drop, but there is still money to be made with it before the video release.

We ain't sunk yet.
