SF Musicians / Golden Gate Bandshell

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I have two beautiful old formal studio photographs taken in SF c. 1895-1903 of "Professor J. Lombardero's Quintette", 1617 Leavenworth St. One photograph has 5 musicians, inc. Prof. J. Lombardero [bandurria], Ed. Harris [mandola], L. Mojica [mandolin], E. Reeves [guitar], & my grandfather, Leon Calvillo-Zaragoza [guitar]. The other photograph has 9 musicians, 5 are unnamed. I was told that this group performed in Golden Gate Park when the Bandshell was built. Are there archives back this far, and can this be verified? A playbill with the photographs states that the quintette played for afternoon teas, concerts, banquets, receptions, etc. Any info either about these musicians or about the archives would be very much appreciated.

You might contact San Francisco's Performing Arts Library and Museum. (They have a website, and you can ask research questions via e-mail.)I've never been there in person, but I understand they have quite an archive. Good luck.
