Assessment of Power Suppliers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Are there organizations which are handling the Year 2000 surveying, assessment, and contingency planning for electrical suppliers. I am responsible for surveying my company's suppliers and electrical utilities suppliers are of great concern. Are there associations which this effort can be outsourced to? (e.g. associations specializing in the electrical and/or other utilities?).

The best thing to do is to ask your electric utility in writing if they are (1) y2k complaint (2) what y2k deficiencies they have identified to date, and (3) what they are doing to in the area of y2k compliance. As someone who works with a number of utilities, I have found that most utilities have already been asked and have standard responses. Some of the responses are written by lawyers to say nothing. If you get one of those, write back to the head of the utility and state that as a significant customer of the utility you have a right to know complete disclosure information so your firm can mitigate any potential damage that might be caused. That should get the attorney's attention and maybe even get you an off the record verbal response that tells you what is happening.

Customers need to gently push their utilities to do something so the problem is not ignored. Also large customers need to also get their own house in order. I am finding it facinating that utility mangers are telling me about clauses that are starting to appear in contracts and insurance that are trying to make y2k and "act of God" or uncontrolable force contract issue.
