'Titanic' dominates Golden Week (Japan)

TOKYO  Leonardo DiCaprio and his Titanic shipmates ruled the Japanese box office for the Golden Week national holidays in late April and early May. Golden Week is the third-largest box office season in Japan.

From April 29-May 5, Titanic took in 1.05 billion yen ($8.1 million) to claim the Golden Week top spot.

Following on the heels of the ships crew were Sigourney Weaver and her dinner guests in Alien Resurrection, which took in $5.1 million. The two Fox pics held the No. 1 and 2 slots in Japan.

As Good as It Gets rode its Oscar accolades to a strong box office in Japan and came in third, while Jackie Brown was in fourth.

Peak season

Golden Week is a series of national holidays in late April and early May. The other two peaks for the Japanese movie industry are the mid-August summer holidays and New Years vacation.

Titanics run in Japan has already taken it through two of the three peaks in movie viewing. The film is all but certain to be the No. 1 film at the Japanese box office, and will take in more than $150 million at the box office here.
