THE Rose {Would the Bette Midler song have been a good alternate theme song for the movie?}

Hello all! Tonight, I heard on the radio a song by Bette Midler that I have always loved, being the sentimental old sot that I am. The tune was the "The Rose" from the film of the same name. As much as I love MHWGO, I wonder if this also would have been a good theme for this film. The words are incredible and the music and Miss Midler's rendition are great, and the Rose reference fits this film, excuse the pun, to a "T"! I do not often comment on the film as I have only seen it once, but was just wondering if anyone out there had heard this song and thought the same thing. If you get a chance to hear this song, listen to the words very carefully and I think you will see what I mean! Just a little "off the wall" comment.

No WAt there could never be another song to fit this movie but My Heart Will Go On

Peter, I had never thought about "The Rose" in connection to this film, but when I went through the song in my mind, you're right. There is a lot of relevance there. All about how love is different things to different people, but to her (the singer or whoever) love is something that is gentle and beautiful that allows someone to grow. To me, it is like a song from Jack to Rose. Here are the lyrics for anyone who is interested.

The Rose

(words & lyrics by Amanda McBroom)

Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower, and you it's only seed.

It's the heart, afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance.
It's the dream, afraid of waking, that never takes a chance.
It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give.
And the soul, afraid of dyin', that never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

This song is one of my favorites, but I think MHWGO is more appropriate for Titanic because it captures the sentiment of so many of those 700 survivors; their love for their deceased husbands, fathers, brothers, etc. would go on and on.

Agreed on all counts! I also think MHWGO is the best for the movie but just meant if that one was never created, "The Rose" would have been a good alternative.

No offense, Peter, but NO NO NO!!! The song fits perfectly, yes; it is a fabulous song, yes, and we all love Bette...but it's been so played to death that the backlash for this movie would be gargantuan. Thank God for Will Jennings, James Horner and Celine Dion!!!:)

When i first heard the song "Rose" I thought it was a beutiful song. I love sad and slow songs so this fit my standards just right. But when people say that it would be a better song than MHWGO I was like no no no no no. MHWGO made the Titanic and no sing could replace that:)

THE WORDS TO THE MELODY ARE ABSURD AND CONTRADICTORY. YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THE FIRST FEW LINES, BECAUSE IT HOLDS A PROMISE THAT LOVE SPRINGS ETERNAL WITH ONE PERSON....THE PERSON WHO IS RIGHT FOR YOU...YOUR SOUL MATE. AS THE LYRICS CONTINUE, IN PARTICULAR THE LAST LINES, YOU SEE THAT A NEW SEED (A NEW SOUL MATE) SPRINGS FORTH EVERY YEAR. THAT'S NOT LOVE--AND IT IS ESPECIALLY NOT ETERNAL LOVE. LEAVE THE TITANIC ALONE.....LET BETTE MIDLER SING IN CIRCLES, SUCH AS THE LYRICS TO THIS SONG. SHE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN GET AWAY WITH IT.
