Riding the wake of Titanic 's success, News Corp, the parent company of 20th Century Fox, reported first-quarter profits of $268 million, versus $256 million for the same quarter a year ago, a 4.7-percent rise. Profits for the company's filmed entertainment units rose 127 percent over the 1997 period, which itself produced strong results from the hit re-release of Star Wars and sales from the video release of Independence Day.
