UTOPIAS An interactive on-going project by Walter Martin and Paloma Muqoz at P.P.O.W. Gallery, New York, May-April 2, 1998.

Description of utopia station: An adapted desk and chair with built in instructions. On the desk a manual typewriter with a stack of clean white paper rising in a column from the floor to the level of the desk beside it. A short distance from the utopia station a metal waste paper basket. Description of action: Participants will be invited to sit at the utopia station and type a short paragraph describing some aspects of their utopian vision i.e., what would constitute for them the perfect world or social order. When a person approaches the station there will already be a finished paragraph in the typewriter carriage from the last writer. It is the responsibility of each succeeding participant to first of all, pull the last persons paper out of the typewriter, crumple it into a ball, and throw it in the general direction of the waste paper basket. The new writer will then take a piece of paper from the clean stack, load it into the typewriter, write his or her ideas for a utopia, and leave it there for the next person to read and discard in the same fashion. Viewers are encouraged to look through the garbage. We would greatly appreciate your contribution.
