Y2k Testing of legacy RTUs ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

I have come across hundreds of legacy Remote Terminal Units (manufactured before 1985) in many electric utilities in US and India. Majority of them have a proprietary firmware/ protocol which has been enhanced/ modified over the years by the utility or a contractor. Availability of source code to do an overall scanning is a big question. Has any utility commenced testing on these RTUs - to name a few: Moore Systems, Westronics, Control Data, Siemens, BBC ?

I know of one company that's started some work on Westronics RTU's; don't know the vintage though. From what I understand, it's not pretty. I'll email you with some details. Don't know about the others. I've heard rumors that some of the Siemens stuff needs work, but don't know details. Maybe someone else in the forum can provide some details?
