Captain James H. Blethen and Vanderbilt Line

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Seeking info on Vanderbilt's New Nicaragua Steamship Line and James H. Blethen and James H. Blethen, Jr., both master mariners. They brought immigrants from San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua to SF and Blethen, Jr. seems to have sailed the first steamer to Australia in the late 1800s. I have news clippings on the wreck of the North America. Does anyone know where the ships logs are for that time? Thank you.

Have you contacted SF's Maritime Museum? They could probably help you out. I also recall seeing a book in the state library that had a title something like "Steamers of the Gold Rush Era" that talked quite a bit about the Vanderbilt line.
