I heard on the radio today that Titanic will be released in September in time for the Christmas sales. It will be on two tapes. Each tape will cost $19.99. So the total cost will be $40. Did anyone else hear anything like this?

On a two-tape VHS set in the USA (and, presumably, Canada); minimum suggested retail price: $19.95.

Hi Melanie: My first question to the radio station would be what is their source? I would say that's a pretty good scenario but I would want to hear it from the production company. Bear in mind that the television rights have been bought by NBC, and I would be willing to bet that there won't be a video release until after they air the film (which, I'm sure, they will absolutely butcher with time cuts, content cuts and probably 15 minutes of commercials every 5 minutes and run it over 2 nights!).

Regards, Peter

Even though NBC bought the right to Titanic, that doesn't mean that they'll show it before it comes out on tape, right? Didn't Jurrassic Park go on NBC or ABC or something after the video release? Also I thought that NBC was showint Titanic 2 years from now- I hope they don't wait that long before the tape release...

There is another thread that deals with this but I heard that it will NOT be released by this Christmas! Rather, they are waiting until January 1999!

Unless the film keeps up its current pace at the box office through early fall, I doubt they'd wait until after the Christmas shopping season to release the film in video. And they certainly wouldn't release it in **January**, when everyone's trying to pay for Christmas.

Keeping the film playing in the theaters past Labor Day may seem far fetched today, but it wasn't uncommon years ago. I remember "The Sound of Music" played continuously in theaters for **two years** in the mid 60's.

Cheers!

YOU ARE WRONG AND THE FIRST PERSON IS RIGHT! TITANIC IS OUT SEPTEMBER 1998 FOR A PRICE OF 24.99 VHS and 29.99 DVD AT BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO! VIACOM OWNS PARAMOUNT AND BLOCKBUSTER, SO IT'S FAIR TO KNOW WE ARE PRESELLING IT AND OUR PARTICULAR STORE HAS SOLD 200 COPIES IN 2 DAYS! SEPTEMBER EVERYONE!!!! NOT 1999 but 1998!!! Whoever said 1999 is smoking crack! SEPTEMBER 1998 GO TO BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO AND RESERVE YOUR COPY TODAY!!! AND THE COST OF 24.99 is FOR BOTH TAPES!!

Eduardo, dude, WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING! Hey, I called up Blockbusters and the guy there did not have Titanic in his computer and said that usually all Blockbuster stores would have it in the computer if what you're saying is right. Maybe Blockbusters is doing a market test? Which store do you work at? It won't mail copies, will it?! The guy here did confirm that $25 is a likely price for VHS.

Yes, please don't shout! I'm sure that the people who gave us the information is just trying to be helpful. And I never heard one word about special orders from blockbuster. If september is the due date, won't you say it's too early? To my experience, a film is available for ordering when it's due date is CONFIRMED, meaning the whole world knows about it, and about a month from that date.

The local movie store in my town is talking pre-orders for $19.99 for both tapes. The date has been comfirmed for Sept.1

The best bet is www.reel.com (various people mentioned it before); I'm paying a total (including shipping) of $13.94 for both tapes, to be delivered in September. Go to the web site or call them up; the number is somewhere on this site. I understand they are actually taking a loss with this low price. They're doing it to get name recognition and increase traffic on their site.

I ordered my copy of Titanic through my local Blockbuster store for two reasons: First, I really don't like to order CDs and videos from somewhere that I might have a problem returning if defective. I really prefer the face-to-face situation. Second, with the Titanic pre-order, Blockbuster is offering a $5 "Titanic" Blockbuster debit card that can be used for renting videos and games. And when it's used up, the card (plastic like a credit card) will be yours to keep, so it's another movie collectible. Yes, the price is higher ($5 deposit with the balance ($19.99??) payable upon delivery of the video), but it's worth it to me.
