What kind of accent does Kate Winslet have? (cf. 'My Fair Lady')

It took a while, but I have gotten used to hearing Kate Winslet talk in her native accent. Does anyone know what specific type of British accent it is? It sounds like a middle-class accent, but not *too* refined.

I don't know but a good question! I think she did a great job doing the Philadelphia socialite accent in the film (I think that was it) but her own accent I can't quite place, but is is nice. Anyway, "The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain" although tonight I think they moved the damned plain here!

She's from Reading, Berkshire, which as far as I'm concerned is middle/upper class area (their football team has the nickname 'The Royals'). Anyway, it's definitely a middle class accent, although as you note Thomas, with none of the upper-class cut-glass refinement. After conducting a quick poll around here the only conclusion that I've reached is that there is not really a category, per se, into which you can fit her accent, just a kind of art nouveau, middle class southern accent (if such a thing exists). If I learn anything to the contrary or more definite I'll let you know. Regardless though, it's a nice accent.

Being English I can say Reading is not a middle class area, it is a rough town but Winslet is a beautiful girl.
