I believe it was not a package, but was his life jacket! That would have been typical of Thomas Andrews.

Andrews gave her a lifebelt. He spent much of the evening (both in the movie and real life) trying to get people to wear them and wore his own lifebelt as an example.

In the historical accounts, the last person to see Andrews (in the smoking room, just before the final plunge) also noticed that the life belt Andrews had worn all evening was now cast aside and lying on a table. One more little bit of history Cameron got right.

Jack and Rose weren't real, you moron.

This question, and some of the answers, reminds me of this true story: A hypnotic regressionist was regressing a group of people into their past lives. One woman described fires in Atlanta and her life during the Civil War. 'Your name?' asked the hypnotherapist. "Scarlett O'Hara", she answered, completely serious in her response.
