'We didn't find anything on Jack...' {-e-}

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TitanicShack : One Thread

Well , saw TITANIC again V-day. and I noticed something that might be very abviouse to others but not to me. It's the scene where old rose says " I don't even have a picture of him, he only exists in my memory" Then Bodine says " Whe never found anything on Jack ". The question is- old rose has justabout finished her story, and (assuming) that no one left the ship to investigate " The Jack " story, How would theyof known about Jack. Unless They could remember the 2000 plus passanger list.....Any comments?

Well, first off, there was a rather complete passengers that can be found at http://www.netins.net/showcase/js/titanic. Second, Jack went on the ship under the Swedish name Gunderson, so on the passenger list it'd show up that way. (It doesn't, that part is fiction, but you get my point.) At any rate, can you imagine how Sven and his buddy must have felt seeing their names amongst the "missing and dead" list?

My copy of Walter Lord's "A Night to Remember," the 1976 'Special Illustrated Edition,' includes a list of passengers and crew taken from the original manifest, with misspellings and screwed-up names (Bjornstrom Steffanson, for instance, is listed as H. Bjornstrom). There are passenger lists and biographies in several places on the internet (Philip Hind's 'Encyclopedia Titanica' is one of the better ones), so that line is quite plausible.

Cheers!

The drawing discovered in the safe was signed and dated. I can't remember whether it was signed "J Dawson' or just "JD" but, presumably, they would have checked it against the passenger list prior to Rose's arrival.

Dan, It says JD on the picture. I think this should count as finding something on Jack.

The story took place over two days. She didn't just tell the story all in one day. (Notice the clothing change halfway through) Maybe Bodine could have done some kind of research or called someone to do it for him. :)

Laura, you are very observant! I guess I'll have to go to the theatre one more time to catch the change in clothing!!

This isn't in the movie but Jack was based on Jack Thayer a 1st class passenger. Out of his family he was the only one to swim to a lifeboat. He did jump in the water but didn't die....Rose was based on Ruth Becker a 2nd class passenger who didn't fall in the water but got on a lifeboat. :P
