Cora and 'best girl' {and her doll -e-}

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TitanicShack : One Thread

I believe everyone who would be reading this is aware of, or has noticed the following:

1. the porcelain doll face at the bottom of the ocean;

2. Jack telling Cora that she does not need another picture of herself looking like a porcelain doll; and

3. Jack telling Cora, as he begins to dance with Rose, that she is still his "best girl."

Given all of this, at the beginning of the scene where people are beginning to board the ship, Cora is talking with her father. She is holding a porcelain-looking doll. Although the doll has hair and a hat, the face looks very similar to the one on the ocean floor. If this is true, perhaps there is some significance to the fact that it is Cora's doll. After all, she was Jack's "best girl" and Rose does not want to be another porcelain doll. I would be interested to know if anyone else has any thoughts on whether or not there is any symbolism between Cora, the doll and Rose.

Response to Cora and "best girl"

The doll on the ocean floor at the beginning of the movie is Cora's doll. I read this in James Cameron's Titanic. I have one question though. When does Jack tell Cora that she does not need another picture of herself looking like a porcelain doll? Did you mean when Rose tells Jack this before drawing her?

The doll was a very common design in 1912. When Bob Ballard first saw that on the debris field, he said it really gave him a shock until he realized that it was a doll. I can imagine it did!

Response to Cora and "best girl"

I am glad Jennifer noticed my obvious error. No. 2 should read as follows: "Rose telling Jack that she does not need another picture of herself looking like a porcelain doll."

I can't remember but did we see what was the fate of Cora and her father in the movie?

I don't believe they showed what happened to Cora and her father, but since they appear in the final scene I would assume they died.

The last time I remember seeing Cora and her father was in one of the scenes of the 3rd class passengers behind a locked gate.

The movie did not show Cora or her family's fate in the movie, but if you read the script that is all over the internet, you will see, that in a scene that was cut out, Cora and her father drown behind a locked gate. I'm glad that scene was cut. I couldn't have handled the death of another child.

Elizabeth:

Your link appears to have a typo in it; the index page for the pictures; your URL link would be page 4.
