Rose's butterfly comb

Has anyone noticed the apparent symbolism of Rose's comb? It has a butterfly at the top. She removes it from her hair just before Jack begins to draw her picture. I believe that her disrobing for Jack represented the final stage of her transformation. Up until that point, she had been gradually moving toward Jack and away from the rigidity of the upper class. At that point, however, she was stating that she had finally and completely broken out of the class-based society of Cal and Ruth (i.e., a cocoon) and was now totally free to fly away with Jack. She had become a beautiful butterfly. Has anyone else noticed this obvious symbolism? If so, does anyone have any additional thoughts on this topic?

Yes, Wep, it also relates to the script where Rose tells about the transformation of a caterpillar in a butterfly...But the scen did not make it into the movie...

Good point! Also wasn't Rose's robe made of silk - traditionally associated with cocoons. Also in disgarding a silk robe, she was disgarding the trappings of wealth - I didn't notice many steerage passengers wearing silk (sic)

The comb was found at a flea market by one of the movie's production crew...i forget the name...but anyway he thought it would be the perfect personal piece of Rose to tie through the movie. The actual comb he found at the flea market appears in the very beginning, where some of Rose's belongings are presented to her. A reproducion was produced for the scenes from the past.

I read that someone was looking for a replica of the butterfly comb that is seen in Rose's hair. You can purchase it through QVC. I am not sure of the actual price, but it's not cheap. If memory serves me right, it's a little over a hundred! It comes in a gift box,and is truly beautiful. :-)

I think I forgot to post it here, I think I just sent an e-mail to Miranda, but you can buy a wondefully replicated version of the butterfly comb at a great price at www.angelfire.com/vt/vicky24 I bought it and I have no regrets! There is a jade colored emerald in the middle and a beautifully crafted butterfly set in a gold setting. There are gold claws that stay in your hair like any ordinary clip. It looks excactly like the one from the movie. I was very impressed when I saw it in person! It's very fancy and so beautiful. I urge anyone to buy it - you'll have no regrets. Have fun! I do hope you enjoy it. Kelly :-)
