Hello everyone. I went to see the movie for the ninth time today, and everytime i watch it, there is a part in the dinner scene that i don't understand. hopefully someone can help me with it. okay, in the dinner scene right before the waitor asks jack how he likes his caviar, rose mouths something to jack and jack in return mouths something to her. does anyone out there know what they are mouthing to eachother??? If you could help, i'd greatly appreciate it. thanks.

Response to dinner scene question

I believe Rose is telling Jack that he is supposed to put his napkin in his lap. I assume Jack is not used to this, as I doubt they were required to use such "proper" table manners in steerage. I think that is the part you are referring to anyway!!

Response to dinner scene question

i saw that seen too and i have recently read the screenplay and it does say that she tells him to put his napkin in his lap. but before i read it i thought rose was making a disgusted face saying to jack that the cavier he was about to be offered wasn't good. jack then refuses the cavier and says that he never did like it much and rose laughs. that's my opinion anyway.

I always thought jack said he didn't like caviar very much because in the scene where Jack and Rose are talking beside the rail of the ship (just before the lear to spit scene) jack mentioned that he used to work on a ship that had something to do with squid, or fish or something. I don't remember clearly since it's been so long since I last saw the movie. I guess that means I need to go see it for a sixth time. Anyone wanna join me?? LOL

Miranda: I actually thought the "I never did like it much." part was put in there for an ironic humor. Rose laughs because Jack is obviously poor and most likely hasn't even tasted it. Also, in the original script, before the dinner, in the scene where Jack shows Rose his drawings, he makes a comment about how she wouldn't make it living his life and she would have to go without caviar. She retorts by losing her temper and informing him that she "hates caviar."

Jack actually, truly doesn't like caviar -- He's been in France and has tasted it before. Leo did a good job of giving that line the ring of truth from Jack's point of view. i think i read this in the script as well.
