In what year was San Francisco founded?
-- Sofia Yagudaeva (email@example.com), February 05, 1998
1776. That's the year the Spanish founded a mission and army post (El Presidio) on the shore of San Francisco Bay. However, there was no formal town or pueblo for many years.
During the 1830s a little village known as Yerba Buena (Good Herb) sprang up around the site of today's Portsmouth Square. For political and economic reasons the village re-named itself "City of San Francisco" in 1846 in an effort to become the settlement most readiily asssociated with San Francisco Bay.
