Academy Awards! {-e-}

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TitanicShack : One Thread

I believe that "Titanic" is the best film ever made. I think it should be nominated for, and win, every available Academy Award. Unfortunately, I doubt if that will happen. I believe the Academy Awards will mirror the Golden Globes and that "Titanic" will win for best picture, best director, best score, etc. The only concern I have is that major blockbusters usually do not fare too well at the Oscars (i.e., "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," " Independence Day," etc.). I think it would be a great injustice if this film did not win the award for best picture. Also, assuming she is nominated, it would also be a great injustice if Kate Winslet did not win the award for best actress. What do you think?

We're of similar thinking. But, blockbusters have won: Forrest Gump, Schindler's List, Silence of the Lambs, Dances w/ Wolves, Platoon, Terms of Endearment.

I also agree with your comment in regards to the Golden Globes. I really think that Best Picture, Best Director, Best Score, are shoe ins for the Oscars. I also feel that Costuming, Editing, and other Technical awards will be given. In a perfect world all the actors, both Supporting (Gloria Stuart, Billy Zane) and Leading (Leo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet) would also win, but I'm just sure in those categories.

Which does brings me to a question, with all the other Technical awards and such, does anyone know the record in nominations/awards give to one movie?

Caron, I think "All About Eve" has the record of 14 nominations. BTW, Rocky, another blockbuster, won best picture.

I was just reading the Entertainment Weekly's Pathfinder Message Boards, and someone said that Titanic has the chance of being nominated in about 17 categories. This particular person predicted that Titanic could walk away with at least 12 awards. Again, does anyone know of a record for nominations/awards given to one movie?

Another FYI: Read another article in EW online in regards to the Titanic soundtrack. Looks to be the highest selling soundtrack of all time!!!

Caron, forgot to add that I think "English Patient" and "Last Emperor" tied for most Oscar wins - nine. FYI, "Gone with the Wind" won 8.

The record for Oscar wins is 11, set by Ben-Hur. (This answer is to the person who asked this question, not to the person who posted the original q)

I think Titanic has every chance of breaking every record. In six and a half weeks, we'll know the results. Like the Golden Globes, Titanic will win at least half of the nominations.

i have no doubt TITANIC will recieve nominations, however, as winners, that will be left to the ACADEMY MEMBERS. unfortunately, the ACADEMY never voted for blockbuster films in the past, but then again, "those" blockbuster films were either---sci.fi.,violence,or comedy---the ones the ACADEMY doesn't see as a genuine film, an art film and an Oscar potential. TITANIC, on the other hand, does have the grandeur, the period, the people, that the ACADEMY looks for and favors. and if indeed, TITANIC will win in all the major category, this film will again break records for the first blockbuster film to win Oscars---a great achievement for the picture, the cast, and the director! i truly believe, the only way TITANIC will win Oscars in all major category, is when the ACADEMY will vote with their emotions , together with the majority and not with their peers.

correct me if i'm wrong: but i think The Ten Commandments sweep the Oscars years back. the only film to have done that.

M.M., The Ten Commandments didn't sweep; it didn't win any of the major awards either, to my surprise as well. It did get special effects though. My book says,"Of the 5 best pic nominees, only 10 Commandments and Giant even survive in filmgoers' memories." (Academy Awards Handbook)
