Jack and the lifevest

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TitanicShack : One Thread

Jack had many opportunities to put on a lifejacket but didn't. Do you guys think this was a case of where the author wanted it to be that way so he would sadly sink at the end or was there something more to it? (like to emphasize that Jack was so worried about Rose that he did not even worry about himself.)

BK, I wondered why he didn't put one on when I was watching the movie. On reflection, he didn't have a chance to get his own from his cabin as he was locked up in the 'Master--at-Arms' office. He only got out of there when the ship was sinking, and by the time he was on deck, all passengers had either got theirs from the rooms or had been issued one by the pursers. It was a convenient way for Jack to die and sink from sight at the end, but hey! thats the movies.

If you think about it, Jack was only concerned about Rose. I don't think he cared whether he lived or died. Remember him telling her to get into the lifeboat? And remember when he helped her onto that piece of debris? I thought...there has got to be TONS of debris floating around out there (people were tossing stuff overboard all the time) and Jack simply would not leave her side to even find his own piece of debris.

When Jack was telling Rose to get into the lifeboat, he told her, "It's OK, I'm a survivor remember, I'll be okay" Then when they're in the ocean and she is floating on the debris, and he starts saying how, SHE'S going to MAKE IT!! (God, he KNEW he was going to die, and it didn't matter!!! All that mattered was that SHE survived!) Give me a lump in my throat just thinking about it!!

This amy be way out there, but when Rose got on the debris she should have given her lifbelt to Jack! He obviously took longer to die (sorry this sounds so morbid) than other people in the water. He might have made it if he'd been able to keep his torso above the water!
