Heart of the Ocean Replica?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TitanicShack : One Thread

Does anyone have a lead on where to buy a cheap knock-off of the Heart of the Ocean necklace? It seems like somebody would make a reproduction. I case you're wondering, I've already decided to be Rose for Halloween next year and I need it for my costume!!!! Also, does anyone have any interesting tidbits on the Heart of the Ocean and the Hope Diamond, which the Heart was obviously modeled after? Thanks!

Your question gave me an idea... Why not have someone custom make it for you? I know I will. (When I save up enough $$$$) :)

In a USA TODAY article that appeared on 1-5-98, it says the "Heart of the Ocean" 56-carat diamond was designed by Asprey's of London,"the venerable jewelry house that was a favorite of Princess Diana." The model for the central diamond was, of course, the Hope Diamond, but the prop piece was made from semiprecious stones and white gold. At the time of the article, "not even a costume knockoff" of the necklace was available, and the original was not being offered among the "Titanic" props sold through J. Peterman.

Thanks Kathleen and Rose. Since I wrote this question, I HAVE made my own version!! I took a large heart pendant and painted it with beautiful sapphire blue transparent glass paint, then bought a simple rhinestone necklace and matching bracelet. I glued the bracelet around the edge of the heart and strung it on the necklace. The effect is STUNNING!! I am a professional dancer and recently I performed a piece dancing to "Rose" from the soundtrack and wearing a Rose-like dress and the Heart of the Ocean (I could hear people sobbing in the audience as I performed!) Several women rushed up to me afterwards asking where I had gotten the necklace, and, of course, I eagerly offered for them to try it on, as I think every woman should have a chance to feel like Rose, if only for a moment!! Now I hang it from a special stand in my bedroom and light a candle to it and watch the rhinestones sparkle. I'm just going on about this to give others encouragement to be creative in expressing your joy for this beautiful and touching love story. Also, a friend of mine told me that she had her girlfriend sketch her in the nude in the "Rose pose" wearing only a heart shaped necklace that HER boyfriend had given HER and then gave him the sketch this past Valentine's Day. I got chills when she told me! Rose and Jack forever!!

I read recently that Asprey's is making a real Heart of the Ocean look alike. I read in People that Asprey's"searched all over the world for a rare blue diamond, but couldn't find one large enough. So they settled on a 165-carat Ceylon sapphire the size of a golf ball. The Asprey necklace, worth $3.5 million, will be auctioned at the Princess Ball, honoring the late Princess Di, in March 21,in LA."

Amy,

What a wonderful story!! I'm so glad that you are enjoying Jack and Rose's love so much. Thank you for sharing your "Heart of the Ocean" experiences with us.

I read in my local sunday news journal, that on march 18, The home shopping network will be selling a replica of "the heart of the ocean". Starting at midnight,it is part of the R.J.Graziano collection. A jeweler from New York, who was so inspired from the movie, that he decided to design his fall collection around the ships treasures worn by the doomed ships passengers. The necklace is supposed to sell for only $55 ! I think that is a great deal! It is expected to sell out quickly. So good luck people! Hope you found this interesting!

-- Pennie Halling (flowerpen2@aol.com), March 03, 1998.

Thank you everyone for your information!!!! I am too excited to see the one on Home Shopping Channel!

-- Amy M. (amym@sirius.com), March 04, 1998.

I read that a Heart of the Ocean replica has been created recently from a beautiful sapphire. According to this news, Kate Winslet was planning to where it on Oscar night. The replica was planned to be auctioned off for charity.

-- Rose (rosemarie17@hotmail.com), March 04, 1998.

There is a website that is selling Heart of the Ocean replicas for only $19 each plus about $6 shipping and handling. They call their necklace the Jewel of the Sea, but it is modeled after the Heart of the Ocean. The address is: www.lindenwold.com I am going to buy one as soon as I save enough money.

-- Jennifer (foo@bar.com), March 08, 1998.

I also heard about the 'real' Heart of the Ocean they are making that will be auctioned off, proceeds going to Princess Di's causes. They said that it can be seen on Oscar Night around the neck of Celine Dion before it is auctioned!

Hey JENNIFER!!! I was trying to e-mail you about the heart of the ocean necklace you were talking about, and it wouldn't go through to you!!!! Is "foo@bar.com" your FULL e-mail address? Let me know if you get a chance. I tried E-mailing and calling the 1-800# the Lindenwold web page had listed to no avail. I was wondering if you had gotten through?...Later

-- SRH (Shrenay@hotmail.com), March 26, 1998.

Hi SRH. No, my real e-mail address is sdebesa@worldbank.org. The webpage indicates that they are not selling the necklace anymore. Also, when I tried e-mailing them it wouldn't go through to them. The J. Peterman catalog is selling them at www.jpeterman.com, but it is a lot more expensive. ($198). Sorry over the e-mail confusion!

-- Jennifer (sdebesa@worldbank.org), March 26, 1998.

there is a similar necklace at www.Byrddesigns.com

If I remember correctly it is about $50. Not all that bad. They also have other types of jewelery from Titanic time period. Some inclued, butterfly combs, and replica's of the earrings and necklace that Rose wore in the suicide scene.

I saw the Heart of the Ocean necklace on Monday night worn by a lady that attended a presentation that I also attended. I saw it up close and almost fell over. It really looked like the one in Titanic. She bought it at J Perlman for $198. I emailed Lindenwold and my mail bounced. So I emailed Byrd and hope I get a reply before I decide to send $49 plus $3.25 S & H for the "Heart of the Ocean" the necklace would mean alot to me. My Mom is 80 and her Dad's cousin was a survivor. Good luck to all of you who want a copy of the necklace. I have the long hair, but I am brunette plus Kate is slender and 17 yrs younger and prettier. That would be an idea for Halloween- every year they have a happening at my children's school. I wonder who to be. BUT I am sure more that one would do. Amy M- let me know how it works for you. What dress will you wear? Let me know.

-- Sue L. (slowe@san.rr.com), May 01, 1998.

Correction it is J Peterman and the necklaces both look the same but one is longer. I am leaning toward the $49 one.

-- Sue L. (slowe@san.rr.com), May 01, 1998.

Asprey of London has a picture of the $1.5 million replica on their web page.

http://www.asprey-london.com/

Wow, it is gorgeous!

-- Crystal Smithwick (crystal@9v.com), May 18, 1998.

Don't purchase any other reproductions. The Heart of the Ocean from jpeterman is the one to purchase. It is an exact replica of the one in the movie. Yes...it's kinda expensive ($198), but it is well worth the money once you see it.

-- Nancy Kwan (skwan.2000@scco.edu), May 19, 1998.

I got the Heart of the Ocean from Byrd Designs. It looks like the one to me. I cannot afford the $198 one though.the one to me.

-- Sue Lowe (slowe@san.rr.com), May 22, 1998.

I have the heart of the ocean necklace by Byrd Designs. It is very dainty and gives me the chills when I wear it. It reminds me of my heritage and I had a relative on the Titanic (survivor) But it is the best one I have seen-(necklace!)

-- Sue L. (slowe@san.rr.com), June 24, 1998.

Well, I'm back, the original Heart of the Ocean question asker, Amy M. to tell you that after many weeks of waiting on back order, I have FINALLY received my Lindenwold $19 plus $6 shipping and handling "Jewel of the Sea" necklace and here's the scoop...

It is actually quite lovely and high quality for the price. However, although it IS a blue faceted heart surrounded by Austrian crystals, it is slightly smaller than the one in the movie and the chain is not jeweled. However, the silver chain is cut to look and shine as if it were jewels (tasteful, not tacky). My final opinion--it was DEFINITELY worth it for the low price. I don't think they ever advertised it as an exact replica and, acutally, it's a little more versatile in that it's more wearable for many different occasions as it's not so dressy. Inaccuracies notwithstanding, it's OBVIOUSLY supposed to be the Heart of the Ocean to anyone who sees it. I recommended it for it's versatility and price. But diehards might want to hold out for the J. Peterman look-alike.

-- Amy M. (amym@sirius.com), June 25, 1998.

i had been looking for a replica of the heart of the ocean, and i finally found one!! it's smaller than the one in the movie, but it's really beautiful. it was 44 dollars, which isn't bad.

-- ashley d (godess6244@lycosmail.com), February 20, 1999.

This is gonna sound cheesy, but according to sources, QVC, that big home shopping network, is selling the JPeterman necklaces at their outlet stores at this very minute. They, I believe, are less than what Peterman had originally priced them. For more info, contact me. AS for the real necklace, I heard it was made by Royal Asprey of London.

Just go to Ebay they have knock off heart of the ocean necklaces for $20.00.

I never saw Titanic when it first came out because I was scared of the dead people in the water. I was nine when it came out. Around Christmas time I saw the movie on t.v. and thought how could I have missed out on this. I immediately wanted the necklace. I went on line and bought one. It was at cyberdepot.com. It is a great copy and it is really big. I am going to buy the J. Peterman copy though at some point I hope. But this one is awesome.

-- not saying (tiffanysneckliz@aol.com), August 12, 2004.

Does anyone know if the J Peterman replicas of the heart of the ocean necklace and the butterfly comb are still sold somewhere??
