Peter Kitchell Painting--Appraisal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco Art : One Thread

Back in the early 80's I purchased a Peter Kitchell painting entitled "Grasshopper's Lunch" (about 84"x 28 1/2") from Editions Ltd., One Market Plaza, San Francisco for about $1300. I now need an appraisal of that painting from an expert. How do I find such an expert?

This is rather incredible because today I happened to be surfing Yahoo to get some info on appraising a piece that I currently own by Peter Kitchell. It is entitled Trapeze and was purchased in the early 80s from the same gallery, Editions Ltd., One Market Plaza. I paid $1000 at that time for my painting. Did you ever receive the appraisal info you were seeking and could you pass on that info to me so that I would know the approximate value of my piece? I would be forever in you debt for any info you can provide. Thanks so much.

Interesting topic. I worked with Mark Kitchell, Peter's brother, on a documentary film in the 80's called "Berkeley in the Sixties." It was quite successful, as such documentaries go, and I kept in touch with Mark for a few years afterward. I helped him move once, and he gave me one of his brother's paintings. It has some slight damage in one corner, so it is not something that would be worth anything like what the gallery would sell. I might be interested in having it appraised though, and would be fascinated to learn what such a piece might be worth, even in its present condition.

I also own an original Peter Kitchell watercolour.....bought in Beverly Hills in early 80s.....I have looked everywhere for an appraisal, even to tracking Peter down. We had several conversations, however, I still didn't get a current appraisal. His work is carried by Editions Ltd in Indianapolis. I inquired with them but they were not very helpful. I've learned that they are only interested in answering question if you are looking to buy a piece, not inquire about one. That seems to be the prevailing attitude. Please......any help here would also be much appreciated.

Hi, this has nothing to do with the appraisal of your picture - i just want to know if any Peter Kitchell fans have or know of a copy of Memory of Life for sale ANYWHERE ???

I had a copy but in a fit of generousity gave the print to my sister- in-law who had been trying to find one for an age.

I really miss my picture and would dearly love to find another.

I, too, have tried and tried and tried to find an estimate of the value for my Kitchell work: Raindeer Night Parts A & B '84. This is a signed Editions Limited pair and they appear to be in the original aluminum frames. Yesterday, October 29th 2002, I even tried sending an e-mail to Peter. Help?

I too, have 2 Raindeer Night signed prints in aluminum frames. Has anyone gotten information on appraisals?

I see some of the prices listed here i.e 1300, 4500,.7500...why do i see many of these on other websites for 129.00? He appears to be a prolific artist as the names are the same on many of his paintings...are these posters? i saw "palmate panther" in a consignment shop and they were asking 200.00 the three paintings were signed in pencil, or it appeared that way- im not sure whether they are prints or actually signed- through the glass its hard to tell. any information would be appreciated. thanks lydia

It's hard today to find galleries that will buy back work from a mid price range artist like me. Of course I am not in a position to do that either. So the value is the value you put on the piece. Unfortunately, that is pretty much how it is. I have kept my prices down as I want to continue to be able to make a living as an artist. The galleries agree with me. Here is a current price sampling. The posters are largly out of print and I have some available but they are almost gone. My new work is different and I am moving on to other arenas. You can reach me through my web page---soon to be updated-----< peterkitchell.com>, thanks, pk
