Nuclear Power in Ontario

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

I live outside of Toronto between 2 major nuclear generation stations (Pickering and Darlington)and am getting rather nervous re the embedded systems and Y2K. Does anybody have any idea about the status of CANDU reactors, saftey issues, etc?

Ontario Hydro's record has been terrible the last few years and they are constantly shutting them down for safety issues, retrofits, etc.

With Ontario getting 40% of it's electricity from nuclear power I don't think Ontario Hydro has the option to shut them all down as a precation. Any comments?

Hi Patrick.

The worst thing that could happen to you re the nukes in your back yard is your hydro may go off. The redundant safety systems in the Candu reactors will at worst shut them off. But with 61.4% of Ontario's Electrical needs provided by these reactors, we are working like mad to be able to assure you and all of the people that rely on our reactors that they will stay running.

As the currrent disastrous Canada/USNortheast winter storm power outages are ended, could you let us know what you have learned that may be of relevance to the Y2K utility concerns?

Those I know who weathered (pardon the pun) the ice-storm are all buying generators. Hmmmmmmmnnnnnnnnnnn!
