Letters to Utilities

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Corporate responses to letters about y2k plans and progress seem to be mostly hi-fuzz. How should questions in such letters be phrased so that if sent to members of their Boards of Directors and CEOs, you might actually get a non-boilerplate response (or at least, cause them to evaluate the pros and cons of resigning and early retirement)? I'm thinking specifically about electric utilities and the compamies that transport their fuel to them. Any suggestions before I start drafting my first letters to ConEd and Niagra Mohawk in NY?

There's a great website with suggested letter templates for local governments, utilities, et.al. that you might want to check out:

Rick

Thanks for the website lead. I checked the form letters and the responses they generated on the Cassandra Project site (a useful site in itself for other reasons). These form letters didn't strike me as being specfic enuf to get much more than the largely fuzzy form letter responses shown there. I know from writing to Congresspersons on other matters that unless your letter contains three highly specific targeted questions that cannot be answered with - Yes/no/I'm on it - form letters, the response will be mostly reassuring pap. Has anyone else on this bb had any experiences trying to get info from key institutions on y2k status? Any suggested specific questions in addition to those on the Cassandra site - http://www.millennia-bcs.com/CASSIE.HTM/ ? Victor

Another web site with letters but focused on core infrastructures

At my web site, I have pointers to various letters dealing with embedded systems and core infrastructures, including one written by Leon Kappleman to President Clinton on Nuclear Reactors and Y2k, a joint letter by many organizations dealing with embedded systems, a letter by me to engineering management at utilities, and more.
