Come Josephine?

In two different scenes of the movie we here the lyrics "Come Josephine in my flying machine". Where did this come from? Who wrote it?

Answers

A lot of people have wondered about this- apparently, James Cameron wrote it himself for the movie. It's an "original piece".

-- Liz Gerreaux (gerreaux@hotmail.com), January 03, 1998.

MY DADDY WHO HAS NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE SANG THE SONG......WHEN I MENTIONED THE NAME......HE EVEN KNEW MORE WORDS....IT IS AN OLD SONG HE SAYS..........SO NO IT IS NOT WRITTEN BY JAMES CAMERON....SORRY.

-- CHRISTINA (HAPPY1434@AOL.COM), January 05, 1998.

Yes, I'm very sure that's an old song. Not something original. At the end of the movie did you notice the picture sitting on the desk of Rose going up in one of those private planes? Obviously she was learning how to fly one because Jack sang her that song. That made me cry so hard.

-- Heather (ClickyLove@aol.com), January 05, 1998.

Well the camera swept over all those portraits caus ethey were thing that jack said they were gonna do. Did yu notice that when Jack and rose were up on the deck and he was spitting and stuff? Well Jack is a free spirit and she was enclosed screaming to get out. She longed to have what Jack had, and when he told her they were gonna go on the rollercoaster and ride horses like a man and at the end she was gonna die an old lady, well there was a picture of her on a horse in front of the rollercoaster and she died an old lady in her bed. It all goes to show how strong love can be and how strong their love was for she did everything he said to do. Which made me also cry for the 3rd time in a movie ever!!!

-- Ginger Castillo (lincolnabes@hotmail.com), January 12, 1998.

Yes, it says in the script it was a popular song at the time. Also, in a scene that was cut out of the movie, I think perhaps after the third class party, they walk along the deck singing it, which is why I think it keeps coming up in other parts of the movie....

-- Melissa (juliet3383@aol.com), January 30, 1998.

I also read somewhere that "Josephine" is the name of James Cameron's daughter.

-- SRH (Shrenay@hotmail.com), February 27, 1998.

Come Josephine is written by Alfred Bryan and Fred Fisher. On the soundtrack album it is sung by Maire Brennan, produced by Randy Gerston and engineered by Ray Pyle. From the Album "Back to the Titanic", (sequel to "Titanic" . The CD is on the Sony Label. It's number is SK60691

-- R Holvast (elmpine@norex.com.au), January 02, 1999.

yes. Josephine is Cameron's daughters name, But the song was not wrote by Cameron. It was chosen because it was a popular song of the times.

-- Laura (Roxygirli@alloymail.com), January 03, 1999.

Laura,

I'd say you're pretty much OBSESSED (and obsessions are never good) with a movie if you know the name of the DAUGHTER of the DIRECTOR. And with a movie like "Titanic" (1997) with all of its cheese and unoriginality, I can't help but wonder...

Um...no. I have the second soundtrack and unline totally uncultured ignorant people...like yourself, I have the insight to read the comments on the inside of the CD cover. You have no right to tell me what I am and what I am not Niles. Look at you....you spend your time looking at comments on a message board of a movie you dont even like! My advice to you is to get a drivers license, or a boyfriend, or somthing like that. But, you DEFINATELY need something!!

Laura

-- Laura (Roxygirli@alloymail.com), January 03, 1999.

Laura,

You are hilarious! Just when I started to feel bad that I happened to know the director's daughter's name, I read your post. Isn't it sad that people make you feel silly for enjoying something? You go!

-- CGK (cbroce@usit.net), January 03, 1999.

Laura,

I'm UNCULTURED?! Umm, no, not exactly... but I'm not obsessed with a friggin' MOVIE. I don't know if you've been following any other discussions, but I came here because someone I know was invited here a long time ago, got into an argument with some other people, and left because of personal reasons. I wanted to see what this place was all about, and I got into some interesting discussions with other people. So I decided to stay for a bit. To tell the truth, I'm actually SURPRISED that a message board like this still exists ONE YEAR after the movie came out. You don't even know me. You don't know anything ABOUT me. But about the things you said I needed, I already HAVE a driver's lisence and I'm a BOY. I don't NEED anything. I was just making some observations over an obvious OBSESSION. I never even BOUGHT the CD.

Sorry I ever said anything. I won't look at this thread anymore.

Umm, Niles, just because someone bought a CD doesn't mean that they are OBSESSED (notice I capitalized the word since you love to so often). And just because you didn't buy the CD doesn't mean you wouldn't know his daughter's name. Just some food for thought, if you bothered to watch the Oscars, (which MOST people, whether into movies or not, do) you would hear that James Cameron said his daughter's name on live national television. So, don't come down on someone because they happen to know a piece of information that you don't. I'm sure if we dig into that mind of yours, you know all kinds of tidbits that we don't. Does that make you OBSESSED with all those "stupid" or "trivial" topics? I don't think so. So, have some courtesy before posting something that you knew might offend.

Thank you for listening,

- Josephine (oh darn, I must be obsessed since I've had this nickname forover 4 years)

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), January 04, 1999.

Hahaha. Not imperturbable, I guess. Niles was exhibiting that less flattering attribute all along....

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), January 04, 1999.

Niles does not have the nerve to put his e-mail address. Probably because he would get so much hate mail...At any rate, his life is lacking.

Laura

-- Laura (Roxygirli@alloymail.com), January 04, 1999.

I am probably going to get some of my own hate mail for this, but I think you guys are being a little too hard on Niles. All he said was someone was obsessed, and all hell broke loose. If you bothered to form arguments that were rational rather than just spouting desparaging comments at each other, you might have an enjoyable conversation.

-- Misty (HiRver@concentric.net), January 05, 1999.

I'm sorry Misty, but my argument was irrational in what way?? I don't believe I was spouting in any way. Whatever anyone else says is up to them, but please clarify as to how I was being irrational, by saying that someone is not obsessed just because they know information that someone else doesn't.

Thank you, Josephine

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), January 05, 1999.

Obsession: A persistent preoccupation with an idea or emotion

I don't see where Niles said anything untrue. I am going to do a quick recap for you: Niles said Laura was obsessed. Laura said Niles was "totally uncultured and ignorant . . . [and that his] life is lacking." Niles criticized the movie and the message board, but never got personal, (besides making an observation based on his own experiences, which I agree with). Laura, however, made comments and remarks that were personal and were meant in an offensive manner. Based on this, I think Niles is being treated unfairly.

-- Misty (HiRver@concentric.net), January 05, 1999.

Misty,

Sorry, but I still don't see why you are saying that my argument is irrational. I agree with you that personal attacks are not appropriate. But if Niles wants to make the observation that she is obsessed, then make it based on other things, not because she knew James Cameron's daughter's name. As someone else wrote, they thought something was wrong with them becaue they happened to know it too. I saw him say it on the Oscars and that's why I know it. Just knowing that doesn't make her obsessed. If other stuff does, I don't know, I haven't read her other comments. And if she is, who cares? A lot of people like this movie. Who are we to say when and how they've gone to far? I'm just saying, please re-direct your "spouting" comment, since, not all arguments were irrational, just as yours wasn't.

Thanks for the definition of obsession. Just explain to me how knowledge of someone's name is a persistent preoccupation with an idea or emotion.

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), January 05, 1999.

Thanks Josephine! You know Misty, he has no right to say I am obsessed. OH MY GOD!!! I READ THE JACKET OF A CD COVER!! I AM OBSESSING!! Ya right. You side with Niles on everything. Don't you have a mind of your own? I don't mean to be mean or anything but from what I read in the posts, you are a rael brownnoser to him.

-- Laura (Roxygirli@alloymail.com), January 05, 1999.

Yes, I do have thoughts of my own, and by my own account am also considered obsessed. My friends even called Titanic, when it came out, my obsession. If you had read the other threads, you would see where Niles and I have spent a lot of time disagreeing. I think you have mistaken politeness for brownnosing. I have nothing to gain from kissing up to him, as I do not know him personally. I do, however, believe we should at least be civil. If you can find the thread on how to get the Heart of the Ocean replica, you will see where I told Niles that I thought he was being rude to Miranda, if memory serves me right.

Now, following the definition of obsessed, I think everyone here can say they are obsessed in some way. It has nothing to do with knowing or not knowing his daughters name. I have been visiting this site for over a year now. I read most of the posts, and I know the facination does not stop at his daughters name. Not for anyone here. Now the question is, Why deny it? Why get so upset that someone has called you obsessed? It certainly couldn't have been the first time in the past year that someone has called you obsessed, and there is nothing wrong with an obsession, as long as it stays healthy.

Sorry, Josephine, for not being clear. I didn't think your posts were rude or irrational. The thing that makes me upset or angry, is when people start name calling and being rude.

-- Misty (HiRver@concentric.net), January 05, 1999.

Well said, Misty. :-) I just wanted to add that I am ( as we all are, I'm sure ) a tad bit obsessed. When my friends said it I'd take it as an insult, but I realized after a year that it's true. It's not a big deal, I think it's fun being able to talk about it with you guys and visit new sites, look for Titanic replicas of dresses, etc. I do it on my free time. As long as it stays healthy. I mean I've had a lot of fun over the year, as I'm sure you've all had. There's nothing wrong with being a Titanic lover. Being able to talk about the movie with friends has made this year so much fun, even though I have drifted apart from it a bit. So, just thought I'd share my thoughts and let you know that I feel the same way, too. We all have our little obsessions, whether about a t.v. show, book, or favorite cuisine. I don't care what they think, as long as I'm happy. :-) All the best for a Happy New Year!

-- Kelly (foo@bar.com), January 06, 1999.

LOL Did anyone here notice that even though Niles doesn't know Laura he said she was obssesed yet when she said something about him he complained because she didn't know him? So what gave him the right to say anything in the first place?! Just thought that was a bit interesting....

-- Miranda Swearingen (Kylen1@hotmail.com), January 09, 1999.

Miranda,

I noticed that as well. I just wonder why it's such a big deal to him that Laura happens to enjoy the movie. I thought that was one of the reasons this site was created, to express our thoughts and interests about the movie.

-- CGK (cbroce@usit.net), January 10, 1999.

Miranda and CGK...

Agreed.

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), January 10, 1999.

I second the motion that like George, Niles needs to get laid.

-- BobG (rgregorio@foo.bar), January 10, 1999.

Ha Ha Bob! That one track mind of yours.....

-- Courtney (greenlane@sprint.ca), January 10, 1999.

Everyone,

I have no problem with people LIKING or ENJOYING a movie, but when someone goes far enough to memorize a CD-jacket, memorize magazine articles about how someone's MAKEUP or HAIR in a movie was done, and/or know every last little fact about a bunch of actors and a director, something is wrong. I mean, there are better things to do out there than sit around and memorize junk about a MOVIE. Bob's right - getting laid is one of them. There has to be MORE to life than a movie, and not a very GOOD movie at that. Well, enough said. I don't want to argue. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings - don't take my comments about a movie to heart; if you aren't obsessed, then my insulting a movie shouldn't bother you.

Niles

-- Niles M. Gregory (foo@bar.com), January 10, 1999.

Niles, I WANT to argue. You make it so easy. You're obviously a closet Titanic-lover or you wouldn't contribute here so often. It's okay, Niles, we accept you. We ARE you. Several of us have had discussions offline and have concluded you're the biggest Titanic fan of all. Congratulations. *cyberhug* I have memorized the CD jacket (whatever that's supposed to mean), made up my hair to be like Rose's, and fashioned my speech after other Titanic fans', your especially. People think I'm a friggin freak, but I don't care; I've been accepted to an IVY LEAGUE school. Maybe I'll run into that other dork you keeping calling a nice guy. Niles, I want to hear nothing more about your OPINION (that's all it is, short stuff) on the movie or its fans, and do want to hear about your dating life. What type of girls or guys are you into? Waiting with anticipation, Another Obsessor

-- BobG (rgregorio@foo.bar), January 10, 1999.

Niles,

Hi. I wanted to tell you that I enjoy reading your postings. I am just curious to know--what is so wrong with reading a cd jacket? Or a magazine article? This last year, every magazine has included a piece on this movie. I seriously doubt that most of us have "memorized" every last detail. The fact is, these articles repeat the same info over and over, and the details just become knowledge to us. It's also interesting to those of us who liked the movie. I have a life! You sound so critical of us because we know so much about the movie. Why does it bother you? One more thing, I'm not offended that you would call my interest an obsession, but it's just weird that you are annoyed with someone because they read a cd cover, or a magazine article, or whatever. I am awaiting your reply!!

-- CGK (cbroce@usit.net), January 10, 1999.

Niles,

I agree with CGK, and BobG. Why are you so bothered by the fact that people are reading CD covers? Or magazine articles? Are you saying that either you don't read ANY, or are you saying that you read some and totally disregard any information you may have gathered? (In which case you would probably know nothing) Some may have read the CD cover, magazine article etc, and remembered his daughter's name because they were curious to know more about Cameron. On the other hand, some might have picked up the information (I found out by watching the Oscars and his acceptance speech) in passing. Did it ever occur to you that it might have committed itself to people's memories, simply because once you hear it or read it, it relates to the actual movie itself? "come josephine...." (you know that song that this thread is actually about?) When I heard him say his daughter's name was Josephine, I remembered it because 1) That's been my nickname for a few years, and 2) because I thought that it was sweet that there is a song in the movie that says her name...for whatever reason.

All I am saying is that even people I know who dislike, or even HATE "Titanic" remember that his daughter's name is Josephine, and often ask if I know if that is the reason he used "Come Josephine" in the movie. People remember intriguing things and things that they've seen or heard before. No one is MEMORIZING CD jackets, or Mag articles...we are simply gathering information the same way you do when you read something (assuming you retain any of it--although maybe you don't since that would mean you were obsessing or memorizing it.)

cyas! =)

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), January 10, 1999.

Woah! I sure as hell have been left out of the loop. Oh well, I am back now. And Niles, dont even GET ME STARTED about the CD thing. I just thought it was interesting that his daughters name is Josephine. Is that a crime? At least I dont go onto the boards and post geeky messages like "MY FRIEND GOT INTO AN IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL"? Big woop.Well, I guess since you cant get into one you may as well brag about your friend succeeding. Also, I think you do need to get laid.

-- Laura (Roxygirli@alloymail.com), January 10, 1999.

Everyone,

Well, I now see what George was saying about how you guys are like VULTURES. Because I'm not wanted here either, I'll leave too. But first, I'll answer some of your messages.

Bob,

Aside from your sarcasm, I don't like "Titanic." I only posted here becaues I thought it was an interesting place. Now, so you don't feel so intimidated and scared that someone doesn't share your same views, I'll leave too.

CGK,

Nothing's wrong with reading. Many things are wrong with memorising. I've got a life.

Josephine,

Not reading, MEMORISING. There's a big difference. I don't even REMEMBER anything about some song named "Come Josephine" in "Titanic." The movie didn't seem to be that big a deal to me. It's just that I know a few people whose relatives were killed on the Titanic, so the stuff sort of interests me a little. When I read CD- covers, I rarely remember what I've read, and I certainly can't spout the info off on a message board. At least you're not so insulting as Bob and Laura.

Laura,

You still don't get it, do you? I only posted that thing about George because I though that a few people would be interested in his current situation. If you read the HUGE conversation with him (under the "Relatives of Survivors" directory on the main page), you'd know that BobG, Misty, Gilded Age Junkie, Rose, and Dan Draghici all spoke to him. Because they were interested in talking to George then, I thought they might like to know what's up with him. Is that so wrong? I wasn't bragging about George doing anything. Also, you don't know me. I'm only in 11th grade. I have no idea if I'll get into an ivy or not. That's a year away. Last, I probably do need to get laid - everybody does. Even you.

Everyone,

Well, it was fun while it lasted. When Misty wonders where I've gone, just tell her you ran me out of town on a rail. Good bye.

Niles, if you read this before you leave, would you mind emailing me? There is some stuff I want to talk to you about but I'd rather not post it here. If you don't want to though, that's fine. Thanks

If you visit here again, Niles, feel free to e-mail me. Perhaps we can keep up a correspondance by way of e-mail.

You are stubborn and moronic.

Niles, I am sorry if I offended you. I just didn't get your reasoning. Hope you visit again.
