Big Picture

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

It would be helpful if someone were able to provide the "Big Picture" stats, such as there are 6000 (?) electrical generating stations, that are managed by X # of utility companies. X of these are nuclear, Y of these are hydroelectric, Z of these are coal fired, etc. How many regional grids are there, and are there "firewalls" that can be deployed between them in case of failure in one? Are there any summary stats by state or region on the situation re software, chips, and suppliers? I'm sure that there are other important points, and maybe mine reflect too much ignorance to know what is important to understand, but I thot I'd take a crack at asking about what I don't know.

Look at www.eia.doe.gov

Victor,

You might want to go to www.eia.doe.gov - this particular website has all of the statistical information you could possibly want (and much more) on the electric utility business, both domestically and internationally.

I think as many Electric utilities should attend the forthcoming American Power Conference in Chicago to attend the Panel on Year 2000 session. See below for agenda/speakers.
