Response to Windows XP and MAME

I am running mame32 v.60 on XP Home no luck. I load the gui but when I try to play a game the gui freezes. Is there something in XP that prohibits MAME32 from playing. Also NeoRageX is messed up. There are a few other emulators that simply dont run under XP for me. Are there any suggestions as to configurations profiles that work for XP.
