When Alexander was about 14, a trader brought the horse, Bucephalus, to King Philip, trying to get him to buy it. Absolutely no one, including the King, could get on the horse to try it out, so in anger, the King ordered the trader to take it away. Alexander, who was standing by, stopped the King from doing so, and said that the others simply didn't know how to handle him. Philip grew more than a bit angry, but let Alexander approach the horse anyway. Legend says that, after realizing that the horse was simply afraid of his own shadow, Alexander turned his head so that the horse couldn't see it, and then after calming it down, leaped on its back and proceeded to take it out for a run around the field. Philip, being extremely impressed, burst into tears, and told his son that Macedonia was no longer big enough for him.
