Bla-bla-bla

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Alexander the Great Q&A Forum : One Thread

I have a few questions on the subject, as one who have just completed bachelor degree in general history. How can you answer these questions with such a determination, when most of your answers can properly be described with only one word- bullshit. Who are your sources? Who are these brilliant historians that you rely upon? Check the primary sources more closely and you will see, for instance, that Alexander's homosexuality is unquestionable; that there is no more evidence that Darius sponsored the assasination of Philip II, then there is of Olimpia's involvement in the crime, as it is no one showed more signs of joy on Philip's death, not even Darius himself, than Philip's own ex-wife; that the involvement of Thais in the burning of the palace in Persepolis is also questionable. Your answer on the question "Was Alexander drunk" is ridicilous. How can you know if he wasn't, when there was so much incidences of him being drunk? The Macedonian where accostomed to drinking whole their life- may be this was one of their sources of undying courage. It would be nice if you put at the end of your answers a list of references. That way any one who reads them would know that you are for real!

Galkin, as one who knows good methodology from bad, I can assure you that lumping together all the answers on this forum as if they spoke with one voice, from a unified point of view, shows a lack of attention to detail that would be instantly fatal in a real historian. If you choose to pursue your studies at a higher level, or expect to teach students (god save them from any teacher who sounds like you do), you must pay better attention.

There are answers (not just questions) on this forum posted by several dozen distinct and separate people. As it happens, I have posted roughly 85% of the answers on this board and not a single one of the purported misstatements you cite can be found in anyhing I wrote. It makes me wonder who you are addressing.

As for the charge that many of the answers posted here are bullshit - yes; that is true. I have posted much bullshit here. Any student so lazy as to consult a single anonymous source on the Internet and stop there is taking a big chance. Any student of history needs a good bullshit detector. I tend to concoct bullshit answers to questions that deserve them, at my discretion.

However, now that you've told us how wonderful you are, perhaps you'd like to stay and prove it by doing a better job than that you so willingly criticize. Or, you could just float away on a nimbus of glory back to wherever you came from. i suspect it will be the second of these, with perhaps a Parthian shot of equal value to your opening volley.

How do we know whether your real or not? I dont know whether you've realised Galkin, but this is not just for historians of the age but also for students who wish to communicate with each other giving their thoughts on the subject. We dont all know off by heart refrences from books.
