Laserdisc to VCD

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi Root,

Some time ago, you mentioned about converting Karaoake laserdiscs to VCD for archive. The audio on the resultant VCD's, they either have music and vocal or music only. Is there a way to make them to have music on say left channel and the vocal and music on the right like the commercial ones so that one can select.

Advice from anyone will be very much appreciated.

Yes you can do this, but you will probably need an audio editor of some kind, such as Cool Edit. I have no experience with Karaoke laserdiscs, so if the music is on one channel and the music + vocals are on the other channel of the laserdisc, you just simply record both at the same time. If the laserdisc uses the analog audio track and the digital track, it's more complicated. You'll have to record the entire movie twice, once with each soundtrack, and edit it VERY carefully to make sure you have identical length movies. Then demux and use an audio editor to convert each soundtrack to mono. Finally, you'll have to use the audio editor to combine both mono soundtracks into one "stereo" soundtrack and mux that back in with the movie to create the VCD.

Root,

Unfortunately, the karaoke laserdiscs use the analog track for music and the digital track for Vocal + music. So things are going to be a little more complicated as you said.

Thanks.
